Chapter 15
On the babushkaâs recommendation, Marina decided to look up the thirteenth chapter of Revelation.
With a few keystrokes, she pulled it up on the computer.
The first ten verses described Johnâs vision of standing on the sand of the sea and seeing a beast arising out of the sea, and how all the world marveled about the beast and followed and worshiped him.
She found verse seven quite troubling: âIt was granted to him to make war with the saints and to overcome them. And authority was given him over every tribe, tongue and nation.â
Marina leaned back in her chair.
It was one thing for this beast to hoodwink the entire world, and then make war on the saints. But this said the beast would be allowed to overcome them â Godâs own people!
Unnerved, she continued reading.
Verses eleven to the end of the chapter described a second beast, one which came up out of the earth and spoke like a dragon.
The thirteenth verse of the thirteenth chapter made her skin crawl.
âHe performs great signs, so that he even makes fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men.â
Marinaâs breath stalled in her lungs.
The satellite images sheâd seen last night replayed in her mind â the shafts of light coming down like fire from heaven, apparently destroying Americaâs spent nuclear fuel rods.
A light knock sounded on her closed office door, and Marina flinched.
âCome in.â
A uniformed waiter entered with a breakfast cart.
âJust leave it there, please, near the door. I will serve myself,â she directed.
âOf course.â He moved the cart out of the way, against the wall near the entrance of her office, then quietly exited, closing the door behind him.
Marina sucked in a deep breath and turned back to the Apocalypse of John the Revelator.
Soon, her eyes focused on verses sixteen and seventeen.
âHe causes all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hand or on their foreheads, and that no one may buy or sell except one who has the mark or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.â
That was certainly bad news for anyone who refused to get the beastâs mark.
If you could not buy or sell, you could not eat⦠or feed your children.
Her gaze shifted to the family photos on her desk.
Would she allow Nina and Anton to starve?
It was a horrific thought.
Surely, there must be a way to provide for them, and still not sell her soul to the beast.
Old Testament stories came to mind â Noah had built an ark for his family and filled it with food for them and all the animals. Later, Joseph had stored food for an entire country for seven years, in preparation for a seven-year famine.
No doubt if those men could do such things, Marina could store food for a few people for a few years, if she got started on that project soon.
She sensed that if Prince Hassan was one of the beasts described in this chapter, then time was very short indeed.
